Van Gogh Museum: A Decade of Collecting – Acquisitions 1997-2006 offers a visual and narrative account of the important works acquired by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam during the years 1997 to 2006. Through some 110 pages richly illustrated, the book shows how the museum’s collection was expanded with paintings, letters, drawings and other artefacts, putting them into context with the existing holdings and showing how each new acquisition influenced our understanding of Vincent van Gogh and his circle.

The publication highlights key pieces added over the decade, giving the reader insight into curatorial decisions: what makes a work worthy of acquisition, how it complements or challenges the museum’s narrative of Van Gogh’s life and work, and how provenance, condition and scholarship all play a role. In doing so, it brings to life the behind-the-scenes of museum practice and art history in a focused period of growth.

While concise, the book serves as both a catalogue and a thoughtful reflection on how collections evolve—and what that means for our experience of art. It will appeal to readers interested in Van Gogh, museum studies, acquisition policy or the relationship between art-work and institution.
